If you’ve ever had alcohol, you’ve probably had vodka. It’s one of the most popular spirits in the world, being produced in dozens of countries from Russia, to Korea, to Mexico. The main reason for its popularity is that there’s no shortage in the amount of vodka drinks you can make.
Vodka, in most cases, is simply fermented potatoes. That’s right – who would have thought that oranges and potatoes would make a screwdriver taste so good in the morning… or Friday night. However, the base ingredient aside, there are a seemingly unlimited number of flavors to choose from in vodka – regular, watermelon, cherry, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, mango, peach, orange, grape fruit, chocolate, vanilla, root beer, coffee, pepper, cinnamon, even bacon for crying out loud. Those are just the flavors that I’ve tried personally. With so many flavors, one might have easily thought I was talking about a candy store or an ice cream parlor.
There are almost too many vodka drink recipes to choose from. Whether you’re feeling like a man, and want to pound a dirty martini, or feel like a fruitier cocktail like a cosmopolitan, vodka is going to be the magic ingredient. Vodka is great because you can mix it with nearly anything, even other spirits. The crowd favorite, Long Island Iced Tea is vodka mixed with gin, tequila, rum, triple sec, some sour mix, and a splash of cola. Ironically, no iced tea is included in this vodka drink recipe.
Of course, other alcoholic drinks aren’t the only other ingredients that you can mix with vodka. A dirty martini, which I mentioned earlier is vodka, vermouth, and and olive juice. The popular white Russian is vodka, cream, and coffee liquor. To take it a step further (a step fouler rather), an “Almost White Russian” is the same ingredients, only with semen instead of milk. A little extreme, I know, but it goes to show you, people can find ways to drink anything with vodka.
Whether you have a large wad of cash in your pocket, or a couple bucks in change collected from your couch cushions, it’s not too hard to find an alcoholic beverage that suits your class. Vodka is no exception. When I was in college, I used to buy handles of cheap vodka for less than $15. Now, I like a little more refinement, so I may sip some Grey Goose, a finer vodka that will run more like $60 a handle. The range gets shorter and longer.
If you’ve never had any vodka drinks, or just needed a little refresher, I hope this article did the trick. Drink responsibly.
