Double chins are areas of the neck where extra fat sags and falls, leaving the owner looking as if he or she has a second chin. These features are most obvious on individuals who are overweight, obese, and aged; however, they can appear on anyone. Causes of double chins include: bone structure, too much fat, and genetics. Interestingly, double chins are more of a concern in countries where external beauty is admired (e.g., the United States)over internal qualities (e.g., some third world countries). Thus, double chins are problematic for many obese and elderly individuals who care enough to acknowledge their existences.

Fortunately, for those people wanting to reduce their double chin there are a number of methods that are effective and feasible. Below are some of these techniques.

1) Exercising frequently: When people exercise, they burn fat; when fat is burned, fat cells decrease in size and volume. Although it is impossible to make fat cells shrink specifically in the facial area when jogging or cycling, over time, the fatty chin features will decrease.

2)Eat healthier rations: Keep a diary of how many calories you eat daily, keeping in mind how many you are allowed to have in that  twenty-four hour period (e.g., use a BMR calculator). Also, watch saturated fats, trans. fats, and total fats.

3) Sit up straight: If you tilt your head down, you’re going to have the saggy fat of your neck showing; so, have your back straight and face forward.

4) Chew gum that is not full of calories (i.e., chew sugar-free gum): When you chew gum, you are exercising the muscles around your face, which, essentially, is burning calories specific to the facial region. Thus, this tactic may be one of the best choices.

5) Surgical procedures: For those people who have no other alternatives, plastic surgery and liposuction are available; however, they will cost a pretty penny. After you’re certain that you want the procedure performed, the surgeon will remove the excess fat in your neck area. Be warned: all surgery can be dangerous and potentially fatal.
