There are many different types of plumbing fittings that are used by most plumbers today. These fittings are usually used to stop water flow or change its direction. Some of these fittings are tee joints, cross joints and elbow joints.
Tee joints: These are used to combine water flow or they can also be used to divide it. An example is when it is used to combine water from a hot tap with that from a cold one where the water mixes to get the required temperature. Conversely, it can be used to provide two outlets from one inlet. For instance, in the kitchen where there are two sinks adjacent to one another; the water can be divided into two outlets using the Tee joint so that you have two taps each for each sink.
Cross Joints: These are plumbing fittings that have four openings. Three of them can be inlets and one an outlet or the other way round. A good example would be the sprinkler used to water the grass which usually has one bigger inlet which then divides to three smaller ones that sprinkle out the water.
Elbow joints: These are used to redirect water through an angle of 45 or 90 degrees. For example, they are used where there are two straight pipes running different directions that need to be joined at an angle. The elbow joint is usually the one that is used under the sink.
These are just but a few of the types of plumbing fittings which are used to change directions. There other types that are used to stop the flow of water.
The caps are used at the end of a pipe and are threaded so that they are screwed in, while plugs are made just to fit the end of a pipe.
