Introduction to Victorian Writing Desks

Victorian writing desks are pieces of office furniture that follow a historical era trend of being named after rulers of the time period. Queen Anne desks are another classic example, but Victorian furniture is named after the Victorian age, which is far different than the bordering Romantic era. Most modern desks that claim to be this model are actually replicas, seeing as how the only other way for a piece of furniture to be an authentic Victorian writing desk is for it to be antique.

These desks had two distinctively different traits. Sometimes this term refers to the simply school house furniture of the era, which followed a pattern of functional and simple, although some of the changes in designs would have been considered advanced for the time. While newer desks are obviously going to be more set for modern needs, the Victorian model of writing desks serve their niche well.

The other design of the era, and the ones that are most often intended when someone talks about Victorian architecture or furniture design, are ornate designs that showed a high quality of woodworking and design without flaring up with too much of the outright “art for art sake” that often marked the Romantic time period  Antique Victorian writing desks like this can be extremely valuable if they are in good condition and well taken care of.  Some won’t be quite as valuable, but the living history of it should still make these great pieces of home furniture appealing to home owners.

There are many styles of writing desks, and most of them simply come and go without anyone giving it a second thought. The fact that replicas are still made of this particular design helps to show just how much this era had an influence on the design of furniture that was to follow.
