Solar garden lights are great for you, your property, and the environment. They save you money on the electric bills and use a completely renewable source of energy to provide you with all the benefits that you get from traditional landscape lighting. However, if you’re in a climate that is prone to lots of rain and cloudy days, you may be wondering if your solar lights will work. Thankfully, in most areas they will if you make sure to use them right.
Solar lights draw their power from direct sunlight. While they can work in the shade sometimes, the batteries charge the fastest and the solar cells get the most power when they are placed in direct light.
If you’re in a climate with lots of cloudy days your solar garden lighting can still work well. You have to take extra care to place the lights and the solar panels that power them in areas that get direct sunlight the entire day. In other climates you might be able to get away with placing the lights in areas that get direct sunlight only a portion of the day or are even in the shade all the time. However, with the decreased light getting through the clouds, you can’t afford this luxury in rainy climates.
Also take car to get quality lights, not ones stuck in the discount bin. Quality lights will have better batteries, which can store more power, but more importantly have much more efficient solar cells, which allow you to convert a bigger portion of the sunlight into electricity. This means you’ll need less light to power the same lights.
Solar lights are a great option for many people that are designing landscape lighting. If you live in a rainy climate, don’t fret, you can still enjoy your lights late at night as long as the solar cells aren’t completely covered. Just make sure to keep the lights and as direct sunlight as possible for the entire day and also to buy quality lights.
