Nintendo’s Wiimote and Wii accessories are part of a console video gaming system introduced in 2006. This revolutionary unit operates using virtual technology, making playing games a unique interactive experience. The Wii uses special a special motion control system that works through sensitive remotes and a control bar to capture the motion of the user. These movements are then processed into the game data and translated onto the screen and into the game itself.

The actual system is a DVD-type player. The system is proprietary and will not play movie DVDs. Recently, Netflix has announced that it will begin streaming movies to those Wii users with a broadband connection. In addition, many older Nintendo, Sega and Genesis titles are available via the Nintendo online store.

The Wii’s main controller was unique when it was introduced, but is now being copied by other gaming systems. Dubbed the Wiimote, it utilizes miniature accelerometers which are registered via the sensor bar installed near or on your television.  Accelerometer is also being used in products such as the iPhone allowing screen rotation in response to changes in the phones position. Once the motion has been read by the sensor bar, it is processed and reinterpreted on-screen in a manner appropriate to the software.

A number of Nintendo Wii accessories take advantage of this technology, including the Wii Balance Board. This unit was marketed in a highly popular bundle with Wii Fit software. It operates with the user standing on it, allowing the sensor to capture posture, weight distribution and body movements. Initially marketed as an exercise title, the Wii Fit line has expanded into sports, dance, and yoga games, allowing the consumer to choose from a variety of fun and unique gaming experiences that promote health and fitness as well as entertainment.

Other games such as Wii Sports and  Wii Music also include accessories designed to simulate real-world objects. Wii Sports users employ tennis rackets, golf clubs, or other plastic or foam ’sports equipment’. The Wiimote is placed inside these accessories, providing a unique level of realism. Other franchises, such as Wii Star Wars games, allow the user to insert the Wiimote into the handle of a plastic light saber, providing a more vivid and realistic gaming experience. This interactivity has resulted in Nintendo Wii achieving popularity above and beyond the traditional console gaming market.

A new add-on to Wii’s accessory line is the Wii Motion Plus. Introduced with the title WiiSports Resort, this new controller improves sensitivity of the accelerometer allowing the Wiimote to detect at minute levels of motion, capturing small rotations, subtle actions and providing increased depth of field.

The motion capture abilities of Nintendo’s Wiimote and Wii accessories have created a revolution in the gaming industry. By creating a true interactive experience for both the casual and serious gamer, Nintendo has forever redefined console gaming in both its application of virtual reality interaction and its ability to expand the gaming audience to consumers of all ages.
