Understanding Hemorrhoid Conditions

External hemorrhoids are the most easily detected, and most commonly know types of hemorrhoid conditions. They are known for their pain and discomfort, as well as itching, burning. There are also physical symptoms such as bumps on the outer area of the anus, and bleeding is very common.

Internal hemorrhoids, in nature, are more difficult to diagnose because of the lack of physical discomfort and visual aid. Unless an internal hemorrhoid becomes prolapsed or strangulated, there really is no pain. The reason you generally do not have pain is because of the lack of pain receptors in the walls of the rectum. Bleeding is typically the only symptom that a person would have. Proper diagnosis is required to rule out colon cancer and or polyps, and can be done with the aid of a colonoscopy.

Prolapsed hemorrhoids are a result of swelling of an internal hemroid that pushes and protrudes from the anus. On occasion, a prolapsed hemorrhoid is easily manipulated and returned to the inside of the rectum. The doctor will use a grading system that will determine if that is the best choice, and it is not recommended that you try to attempt this on your own.

Strangulated hemorrhoids are at the next level, just up from the prolapsed hemorrhoid. This occurs when the sphincter muscles seize and trap the protrusion outside of the body. Both are very serious and both require a visit to a hemorrhoid doctor or a specialist, immediately.

If you ignore the blood observed in your stool, it may just be a simple hemorrhoid and go away. If it is something more than simple, the severity of your condition can become serious. It may even require you to have surgery, and could have long term consequences for you.

If you or your family is prone to hemorrhoids there are simple, easy steps to help lower your risks. Drink lots of water, this keeps the body hydrated. Hydration is the best way to prevent chronic constipation. Also avoid eating excess amounts of cheeses and processed food which can also cause constipation. Eat fiber rich foods such as raspberries, lima beans, brown rice and coconuts. Many breakfast cereals are fortified with fiber or you can supplement with a fiber mix drink, available at the grocery store. Fiber helps keep stool soft and keeps you regular. This helps to keep you from excessively straining. It is a key nutrient that keeps your digestive system moving.
