When it comes to mouth problems, cankers sores are listed as one of the most annoying and most painful types. Canker sores are shallow ulcers in the insides of one’s mouth. And because it’s impossible for us to function properly without opening our mouths, the need to get rid of an aphthous ulcer is of great urgency. The sad fact of the matter is that you really can’t get rid of the canker sore pronto. The sore will heal on its own in seven to ten days. However, you can do something about the pain associated with canker sores.

Canker Sore Remedies

Canker sore remedies act by placing a film on top of the sore to keep it from getting bigger. The product also has anesthetic properties that keeps the pain to a minimum. Sometimes this works so well that it completely removes the pain. You may have to use a cotton swab to apply the product to the sore since most of these products are in ointment form. Read the instructions closely since most products will prevent you from eating or drinking for a specified number of minutes to prevent the medicine from simply being washed away.

Anesthetics

You can also turn to local anesthetics to help you numb the pain that comes with having a canker sore. Make sure that the products that you find have benzocaine, lidocaine and phenol as active ingredients.

Antibacterial Mouthwash

Products like Listerine and Scope have active properties that kill and retard the growth of bacteria in your mouth that is a lingering cause for canker sores. You can also look for iodine-based mouthwash if you are bothered by alcohol based mouthwashes.

Preventing Canker Sores

To prevent canker sores from ever plaguing your mouth again, make sure to find toothpastes that do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate. You can also munch on yogurt that does not have acidophilus, and take zinc lozenges.  These are not cures for cankersores but they seem to help a lot of people.
