On July 18, 2008, the results of a study performed by the Journal of General Internal Medicine which included 436 women of either Caucasian-American or African-American women (there were equal numbers in both groups) between the ages of 35 and 48 still experiencing normal menstruation, and was comparing the frequency of hot flashes had by women in both of these groups, was published online. It was discovered that when it came to hot flashes, African-American women were more likely to suffer. Of the African-American women who participated, 53% suffered from hot flashes, whereas only 29% of the Caucasian-American women who participated had them. The study took into account each woman’s body mass index, her medical history, and even her education, but the numbers remained the same. At this time, the only thing we know about this division of hot flashes among race is that it exists. Further research needs to be conducted to learn the underlying cause for the difference.
