Cairns is known for being the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling, diving, coral viewing, and island hopping. Cairns is an important part of any travel guide to Australia. These travel tips can help you to make the most of your time in Cairns, and see all the important sights as well as take part in the most famous attractions.

Cairns is located in Tropical North Queensland, Australia and many people visit Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef, tropical rain forests, restaurants, and adventures such as bungee jumping, diving, rafting, and horseback riding. Cairns is the perfect place to relax as you can catch a boat to the reef, swim with the fish, walk through some of the oldest rain forests in the world, and visit one of the islands off the coast to veg-out for a while.

Cairns offers the best of both worlds, as you can either spend your trip relaxing on sandy beaches or out partaking in adventures and wild nightlife – or perhaps a bit of both. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is an activity that should appeal to every kind of traveler. It’s a great way to experience the rainforest. Cable cars carry you on a 5 mile journey across the top of the rainforest canopy to the village of Kuranda. It’s an exciting and yet at the same time relaxing way to see the rain forest.

Another great way to explore the countryside of Cairns is by taking a drive down the Great green Way. It is the main road that connects Cairns to Townsville. The road takes you through sugarcane, papaya, and banana plantations, dense rainforest, white beaches, and water spotted with islands. The trip is about 4 hours from each destination, with lots of possible stops along the way to explore towns, parks, rainforests, and waterfalls.

Of course, it should go without saying that no list of Cairns travel tips is complete without a visit to the Great Barrier Reef. You can take half day cruises to Green Island, which will allow you to snorkel, swim, and explore the reef. The Underwater Observatory will get you a close up look at the reef without even getting wet.
