The end of the Second World War saw the start of a fresh new era in design style. The gloves were off and the rules were meant to be broken as furniture designers were able to break out of the staid muted colors and cookie-cutter designs. Suddenly, everyone was prepared to try something different and the result was a range of furniture that pushed the boundaries of taste so that the retro era evolved. Lamps were part of this push and there is now a range of lamps that are easily identifiable as having origins in these times.

There was a sense of fun in the furniture that were designed and manufactured during the retro era. Unusual color combinations such as tan and pale yellow, avocado and burnt orange were all suddenly popular as were the fascination with flowers and dazzling geometric designs. Plain surfaces were replaced with inventive designs with more and more detail added to lamp bases and shades.

Designers found it possible to turn the more traditional lamps such as antique alabaster table lamps into fresh pieces with just a few simple additions. These days there are numerous alabaster lamps from the retro era that cannot be mistaken as coming from any other period in time.

Fashions go through many phases and they also tend to turn around quickly as older styles come back into vogue. The retro era went through a period where anything remotely appearing to have come from the 60s or 70s was regarded with disdain. The wheel has turned and retro is now back again.

Decorative pieces such as lamps from the retro era are once again being highly sought after and even recreated and placed in furniture stores again. If you look hard enough you should still be able to find a solid range of retro lamps in antique stores around the country.
