When you walk into a gym, what is the first thing you see? Rows and rows of cardio equipment. You’ll see treadmills, elliptical machines, stair steppers, upright and recumbent bikes, and other sorts of cardio contraptions. Naturally, this would make you think that doing cardio would be the best thing for fast weight loss, so you hop on a machine and you enjoy your run and you get off feeling good, in fact, you may even lose some weight.
So you continue to do cardio and you notice you’re able to run farther and faster than you were before, so you figure you’ll be burning more calories which will be perfect for weight loss. Then you go to weigh in and you barely see any weight loss, if at all. What happened? Why aren’t you able to lose weight anymore?
The problem is that your body adapts to cardio exercises, and it does so fairly quickly. That is why you were able to run faster and farther without feeling as tired. Your body becomes a lot more efficient at doing these exercises because there are no additional weight demands placed on your body and muscles. While efficiency is great for running long distances, it is horrible for fat loss. Your body uses fat as energy, and so if your body is more efficient and burns less energy, then it is burning less fat and you’re losing less weight.
What you can do is strength training exercises. These will place demands on your muscles (because of the additional weight) which will keep them burning fat which will help you to lose weight. Whether you use free weights, your own body weight, resistance bands, or weight machines it doesn’t really matter because you’ll be able to give your muscles resistance which burns fat off of your body.
Hopefully you’ll now know that cardio should only be done as a warm up if you’re trying to lose weight, but it is great for running long distances.
