What is Normal During Menopause?

When it comes to menopause, some women go through it with very little difficulty while other women have a very tough time. Some of it is genetic luck, but other things such as diet, exercise, smoking and drinking can all play a part in a menopause. Even racial makeup and the culture a woman lives in may factor into the equation. A lot of women assume that menopause is a difficult transition, but only about half of all woman actually get menopause signs.

Obese women and smokers experience more intense symptoms especially hot flashes, this is why maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important at all ages.

In some Asian cultures women don’t even have a word for hot flashes, because they are virtually non-existent, while in the US, they are the most wildly reported symptom. Obviously this is very interesting, both for women who are looking for answers and scientists looking to unlock the secret. Some theories suggest that this may be due to diet. Asian women eat a lot healthier than we do; they eat a lot more fresh vegetables and definitely a lot more soy. Some studies suggest that soy may be the key, but scientific studies have been mixed.

It should probably come as no surprise that culture and attitude plays a big part in menopause. Women who live in cultures with less negative views on aging report menopause as a more positive experience, while women in the US, where aging is fought at every turn, have a lot more psychological symptoms. In other countries these psychological symptoms are much rarer.

So many things factor into menopause that it is impossible to predict exactly how each woman’s experience will be. One thing that is true is that in some small measure we are all responsible for how we experience menopause. We can’t control the culture we’re raised in or our genetics, but we can definitely manage our health and our emotional responses to aging to hopefully make menopause a more positive experience.
