It’s easy to spend huge amounts of money on guitar accessories, many of which you end up hardly using at all. However, not all guitar gear falls into this category, and there are actually a few items which are extremely useful for most guitarists – and best of all, they don’t cost very much money either. We’ll look at three of these in more detail in this article.
1. String Winder
A guitar string winder is a very useful little accessory which can be bought very cheaply. A string winder makes changing your guitar strings very quick and simple. All you do is attach it over your tuning pegs, which can then be tightened or loosened very rapidly. It’s a lot easier than twisting them by hand, and the time saved can be especially valuable if you need to change your guitar strings during a live performance or any other situation where time is of the essence.
Some guitar string winders offer additional features that make them even more useful. Examples include a cutting tool which enables you to cut your strings down to size at the same time as you’re changing them, or a tool to remove acoustic guitar string pins easily from the bridge.
2. An Electronic Tuner
A second useful type of guitar accessory is an electronic tuner. These usually cost less than about $20, and are well worth the small investment. It’s extremely important to play and practice on a properly tuned guitar at all times. And while all guitarists should learn how to tune a guitar without relying on electronics, this is a skill that can take time to master if you’re new. In the meantime, using an electronic tuner will help your ears to get used to the sound of what a well tuned guitar sounds like. These devices can also be really useful when accuracy and speed are important, such as when you’re performing a live gig, or are in the studio.
3. A Pick Holder
If you’re like most guitarists, you know how annoying it is to lose your guitar picks, especially in performance situations. A pick holder provides an easy way to keep those unruly picks in their place. This is a tiny little plastic container that will hold several guitar picks at a time. Some pick holders have a sticky backing which enables them to be attached to your guitar or microphone stand very easily. Others may be attached to keychains, necklaces, and similar items, so you can keep them with you. A pick holder only costs a few dollars, and can save you a lot of money on lost guitar picks.
Considering how much overpriced stuff is out there, it’s nice to see that some of the handiest guitar accessories are those which cost the least!
