The Spy Who Loved Me: Roger Moore’s Coming of Age as Bond

It’s strange to think that Roger Moore was once almost dropped as Bond. His portrayal as Bond stands alongside Connery’s in movie goers minds around the world. And It wasn’t until ‘The Spy Who Loved Me‘ that he really hit stride as Bond.

Moore’s previous outing in ‘The Man With the Golden Gun’ didn’t sit easy with all Bond fans and his treatment of the ladies was more akin to Connery’s Bond. But it all came together in the next movie where Moore decided to play Bond more for laughs. This was a method that he deployed for the rest of his Bond career but especially so in this movie and in the following ‘Moonraker’.

He made the raised eyebrow his own special trade mark and introduced a homorous element to the Bond movies that continues to this day.
