If what you are after is more pleasurable time out on your patio, then you are looking for ways to eliminate those pesky insects. Bug zappers have long been used to quickly eliminate the sounds of buzzing insects around your patio space. At Patio Covers Place, we are eager to find new ways to eliminate nuisances to getting more enjoyment from your patio.
In the case of the bug zapper, we are just not convinced this is the case. We will get to the reasons in a minute, but the point is that there may be more effective ways to manage your outdoor insect problem. One thing to point out is that depending upon what you are looking for, an electric execution of all flying insects may not be in your best interests. However, if you just like the peace of mind of hearing those suckers get zapped, then by all means, get one and open up another cold one.
It has been shown that there are other means more effective than this method at eliminating biting insect problems. One of the most effective of late is simply not providing them a means of showing up – in other words it is protection or prevention. If you eliminate standing water and smelly garbage problems, this helps to some extent. Also, you can check into things like mosquito traps and the like to help specifically target these insects rather than a blanket attempt at zapping all flying insects.
Mosquito traps are great because they are actually designed to attract these types of annoying insects directly, rather than trying to get all flying insects and hopefully some will be mosquitoes. In fact, there is evidence from studies – yes, they’ve done studies on this – that mosquitoes are not actually killed in any measurable degree by using the traditional bug zappers.
A mosquito trap works by emitting carbon dioxide, humidity and in some models a mosquito attracting pheremone to lure them into the trap. Then, because of the way the trap works, when they are close enough, they are sucked up into the unit via the vacuum mechanism. Because these traps run on propane, they are not limited to the location of an electrical outlet or long extension cord. Just to be clear, we are not some type of anti-bug zappers site or something, we just promote and try to provide information that is as useful as possible to the patio enthusiast. If you feel that your experience with bug zappers has been different and beneficial, that’s all the better.
