Metal and Sheets – Different Kinds

Roofing sheets are generally produced from either plastic or metal. They are commonly seen on all types of large buildings and also some smaller ones. Agricultural, industrial and commercial buildings all make frequent use of roof sheeting. This is due to their ease of installation, cost effectiveness and minimal maintenance requirements. A sheet metal roof will be more commonly seen on the larger buildings than a plastic roof, this is due to the longer lifetimes and increased strength of the metal options.

Metal roofing sheets are most often produced from either aluminum or steel. Some other metals such as copper are sometimes used, but not very often. Steel is by far the strongest material out of those that are used in mass production processes. It is highly dent resistant, this makes it very effective in areas where frequent and violent storms occur. Steel is also relatively lightweight, giving it a very impressive strength to weight ratio.

Aluminum roof sheets are even lighter than steel ones, but not as strong. They can be dented quite easily when struck with a direct impact. They do have a major benefit though, this is their natural resistance to corrosion. This property makes them very popular in coastal areas where the air will contain higher than normal levels of both moisture and salt. Aluminum is able to react with oxygen in the air to form aluminum oxide. This creates a seal over the metal which protects it from corrosion. This is much more effective and longer lasting that the galvanizing techniques used to prolong the lifetime of steel. Because aluminum is so resistant to corrosion it does not need maintenance or repair work to be carried out on it very often. This makes it an extremely cost effective long term choice. It is also relatively cheap to install when the long lifetime you can typically expect from it.
