Standard free weight sets are excellent for beginners and casual lifters. However, at some point in a work out program, the lifter’s ability and strength may exceed the upper limits of a standard set. Olympic free weights are designed for two inch barbells and dumbbells, as opposed to the one inch standard sets. The upgrade to Olympic weights means the lifter will not be confined to standard bar weight restrictions. An average standard weight bar weighs about 16 lbs with a maximum load of 200 lbs. Olympic weight bars are seven feet long and weigh 45 lbs. Olympic weight bars can support weight in excess of 300 lbs. Certain higher grade steel Olympic bars are rated at over 1000 lbs. It is an important safety note that Olympic weights are not compatible with standard bars.
